would technology re-invent itself?

5 Jan

I love NPR. We all know this. One of the shows that i really enjoy on NPR is called Radio Lab. It used to come on Saturday mornings and it was convenient because I was working alone in a drive thru coffee cart. I would look forward to the Saturdays I was scheduled because of the NPR line up…i know, kind of nerdy, but it was so good. Since leaving that coffee shop I have continued to listen to Radio Lab. I have some of the podcasts, but mostly while i am doing the boring work of writing Social Security Numbers on stacks of paper at the community college i work at instead of listening to Pandora or whatever I listen to Radio Lab. It helps pass the time. Each episode is 1 hour and so intriguing. This is the “about” from Radio Lab‘s website….

Radiolab believes your ears are a portal to another world. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience. Big questions are investigated, tinkered with, and encouraged to grow. Bring your curiosity, and we’ll feed it with possibility.

It truly makes me think. It is awesome.

One of the things it got me thinking about recently is what and how technology could or would evolve again if for some reason we lost all our modern conveniences and were forced to primitive, Little House on the Prairie type living. Could we, knowing and experiencing what we know in 2011, be content living without electricity, internet, phones, cable tv. Or would technology re-invent in the current circumstances.

One of the podcasts on Radio Lab that I enjoyed is “What Does Technology Want?” It kind of asks the questions of inventions and technology almost evolving itself.

So, my question to you is, if something like Y2K (because i know it can’t actually happen, Y2K that is) were to happen and our modern conveniences were wiped out worldwide do you think we could get back to where we are currently or do you think it would even be possible or desired?

The other day i was driving to meet a friend for coffee. i was in an anti social mode and typically when i am in that mood i love to listen to NPR…i know, i know…super liberal and some of you probably think i am a sinner for listening to liberal radio, but during the day they have very interesting content.

Well, this day they were talking about some Prep Schools removing all of their paper books and replacing them with e-readers.

I had mixed thoughts about this. The nostalgic feelings that well up in me when i see a book that i read and held and cried in and wrote in the margin…i cant imagine not having that. But its pretty cool.

Then today YouVersion had a webinar to explain some of the new stuff that is coming out (that is pretty cool) and Bobby Greunwald was talking about being at a conference where people were asked to hold up their Bibles and most people held up their cell phones….

Once again…i was thinking about what it would be like to not have a paper Bible in my hands. My Bible is all written in and marked up with significant dates and lessons in my life….and i cant imagine not having that….But YouVersion and the Bible in my pocket on my phone is pretty cool…convenient and just and awesome tool.

So this week i have spent a lot of my time thinking about what it would be like with no books. that you buy a kindle or another e-reader and buy an e-book….you cant put them on a book shelf….you cant write in the margins…you cant pass it on to a friend or re-sell it.

But it would be easier, better on the earth (and yes, sometimes i am “green”), better financially…and would be very convenient…and it would work. It was like the transition from CD’s to MP3′s….or scrolls to books….

As i roll this around in my head i would love your perspective or your opinion….Do you use a lot of e-books or do you still buy paper books? Do you think going totally e-readers and such is a good idea? Do you like it? Will you ever give in?

Work email

As I have come back from my 40 days off of social media and then my week long wonderful vacation I am toying with the idea of getting my work email sent to my cell phone.

I have my pros and cons list but was wondering what your opinion is….

Should I get my work emails on my cell phone?
